When do I start wearing maternity clothes?

We’re halfway through this pregnancy and I’m finally dipping my toe into wearing maternity clothes.

As I'm sure many of you mamas and mamas-to-be know, the toughest part about the purchases I make right now is knowing that I may only be in them for a few months #wasteful. I barely know what will fit me tomorrow, let alone after Baby S comes!

But alas, I can only hold my jeans together with a hair tie for so long.

Here's how I've been wearing maternity clothes (while still sticking to my values and personal style) for this growing bump.

  1. Buying roomy or empire waist tops and dresses at my regular stores. What I love about a tunic top or swing dress is that while they might be shapeless on the hanger, you have a lot of control with the help of a belt. As your belly grows, just adjust your belt (instead of your whole wardrobe). Some examples of my new additions include this poplin top from Everlane (which I continue to get a million and one compliments on) and the Addie oversized blouse from Amour Vert.

  2. Switching to a block or wedge heel for more comfort and support. I had been eyeing the Nisolo Lucia block heel* for months, and the more preggo I got the more I knew I needed to have them. They also have a "sister" sandal called the Serena which, incidentally, my actual sister owns and raves about. (Good excuse for me to get another pair of sandals? I think yes.)

  3. Shopping secondhand. I've been able to stick to my values and my personal aesthetic is by getting flowy tops and dresses from the brands I already loved (see above) and sometimes sizing up. But there are also tons of great secondhand options. I got the J. Crew dress I'm wearing here (not maternity but v roomy) at a local consignment store for about $25. And I've ordered a pair of shorts, distressed maternity jeans and a maternity shirt-dress from thredUP. I've also been eyeing Poshmark for BLANQI leggings and tanks, and I take a look at Clothes Mentor whenever I drop off clients' sell items. (Did you know Clothes Mentor carries maternity clothes??)

  4. Looking for new eco-conscious lines. A lot of mamas know about ASOS' great maternity selection, but did you know they also have an eco edit? I recently ordered a pair of jeans (I recommend sizing way up in ASOS, as it's generally European sizes), a denim jumper and a cord short dress. Check out the ASOS maternity eco edit or go to asos.com > search "eco edit" in the search bar > click the "range" dropdown > select "maternity."
